This is the depths to which we descend to try and make a good UX for a field that is usually only one line, but might be many. http://jsfiddle.net/Pegsa/

http://jsfiddle.net/garyposter/Pegsa/8/ has newer version. We don’t like the complexity to set and retrieve values; and we are unhappy that the approach is lossy in regards to tab characters. Another approach could be something like http://www.jacklmoore.com/autosize/ , but it doesn’t start out as a single line, which is a UX goal.
